Double tax treaties with Greece

Last updated: 25 September 2026

When you live in one country and have income from another, both may want to tax it. Greece has double tax treaties with many countries, which set out which country taxes what and how the tax is credited. We make sure they are applied correctly in your case.

How a treaty works

  • Which country treats you as resident: if both do, the treaty has criteria to decide which one prevails.
  • Which country taxes each type of income: for example, rent from property in Greece is generally taxed in Greece. For pensions, salaries, interest and dividends the rules differ from treaty to treaty.
  • How double taxation is avoided: usually by crediting the tax paid in one country against the tax due in the other, or by exempting the income in one of the two.

When it concerns you

  • you live abroad and have rent or other income from Greece,
  • you live in Greece and receive a pension or salary from abroad,
  • you moved during the year and have income from both countries,
  • tax was withheld on interest or dividends and you want to reduce or reclaim it.

What it takes in practice

The key document is a tax residence certificate from the country where you are resident, sometimes with country-specific forms. Then a correct return in both countries: what is declared in one must match what is declared in the other.

We handle the Greek side and work with your accountant in the country where you live, if you have one, so the two returns agree.

If there is no treaty

Greece has no treaty with some countries. Even then there are rules for tax paid abroad. We check what applies to your country.
