Tax residence certificate
Last updated: 25 September 2026
A tax residence certificate proves which country you are tax resident in. It is the key document for avoiding double taxation and for AADE to recognise you as a non-resident. We tell you which one you need, from which country and in what form.
Two different cases
- A certificate from the country where you live, for Greece. It is issued by your country’s tax authority (for example the Finanzamt, HMRC or Belastingdienst). You need it for a change of tax residence and to apply the double tax treaty to income from Greece.
- A Greek certificate, for abroad. If you are a Greek tax resident with income from another country (for example a pension or dividends), that country may ask for it to reduce or not withhold tax. We obtain it for you from AADE.
When you are asked for one
- for a change of tax residence with AADE,
- to avoid the same income being taxed in two countries,
- for reduced withholding on interest, dividends or royalties,
- by banks or pension funds abroad,
- for the relocation incentives (articles 5B and 5C of the Income Tax Code), as proof that you were resident abroad.
What to watch for
- The year: a certificate covers a specific tax year. You often need more than one.
- The form: some authorities require an Apostille or an official translation. We tell you in advance, so you do not have to request it twice.
- Special forms: some countries have their own forms for applying the treaty, completed together with the certificate.
Which certificate do you need?
Tell us who is asking for it and for which income. We reply within 1 working day, Greek time.
